Howdy-ho, kitchen fans,

I’ve seen the oak kitchen of the future, and it’s laden with smart this, holographic that, but if you want a kitchen laden with the best that modern cooking gadgetry has to offer, then you best get your shopping list out and start taking notes. Here’s a list of my picks for the top 5 futuristic gadgets: handy, homely, and perfect for solid wood kitchens!

Aga Total Control

Aga Total Control

AGAs may not – at first glance – seem particularly futuristic, but their iconic retro design has been brought firmly into the 21st century thanks to the state-of-the-art Total Control models.

Available in 3 oven or 5 oven models, the total control gives you full and flexible control over the ovens and hotplates, and even allows you to set the AGA to still provide ambient warmth in the winter, whilst remaining off in the summer months.

If you’re looking for an up-to-date oven to fit into a farmhouse kitchen, then has got to be it. We’ve even got one on show in our showroom if you want to take a closer look.

Click & Grow Smart Herb Garden

Click & Grow Smart Herb Garden

If – like me – you have pondered the idea of growing your own herbs in your kitchen, but your fingers aren’t quite green enough to set off [a] rocket or you just simply don’t have the thyme (!), then the Smart Herb Garden from Click & Grow might just be for you.

It’s a self-contained garden that takes all the hard work out of herbs by feeding and watering them automatically, and has its own LED lighting built in to aid speedy growth.

You don’t even have to touch the lid to dispose of your rubbish, just wave your hand above the lid like some kind of organic magic wand and the lid will automatically open.

Moen taps with MotionSense

Moen taps with MotionSense

Another gadget that requires little more than a wave of your hand to operate – the Moen MotionSense range has built-in sensors that mean you can wash your mucky hands without even touching the tap itself.

If you happen to be hot on hygiene then it’s perfect for curbing the spread of germs as well as keeping the tap considerably cleaner.

There’s a range of designs to suit modern and classic kitchens, available in chrome, bronze or stainless steel.

Philips AirFryer

Philips AirFryer

Fried food traditionally conjures up all sorts of unhealthy connotations, but that’s usually down to the unhealthy amount of oils used to cook the food.

Fancy new air fryers such as this one by Philips use little or no oil to fry food with the same tasty results, but without much of the unhealthy effects that food bathed in oil usually represents.

Whether you have a hankering for crispy chips or Kentucky-style chicken wings, the air fryer can feed your cravings whilst being considerably healthier.

entry one hundred and eleven

Howdy, guys and gals,

So this is entry one hundred and eleven in our little ol’ diary – or 111, if you want to spell it out in numbers. Yep, we’ve come down with a case of the triple 1s: but then again, we already think that we’re number one at what we do, so we’re happy to go along with this!

Assured quality aside, we totally understand the need to take a looksy at our gorgeous furniture before committing to buy wood kitchens; and if you aren’t conveniently placed to visit our lovely Gloucestershire showroom, you might worry that this won’t be possible. But you needn’t worry: our online sample service is here to help!

For a small cost, customers can order samples of our solid wood worktops, oak cabinets and solid oak doors, in every variation, for an affordable price! These will be delivered on a next-day service and can be purchased directly through the website. Bonzer.

Our worktop samples are small sections of real worktop stock, oiled on one side to give you an impression of the finished look; our cabinet samples are fully-finished 160mm X 80mm X 18mm panels, the exact same material that is used in our full-size cabinets; and our door samples are miniature versions of the real thing, hand-finished in your choice of Farrow & Ball paint, lacquered, or in a sanded, natural state.

The small initial cost can even be refunded if you go on to place an order: are we fair or are we fair?! So go on, check out our samples today – you’ll be one step closer to creating your dream kitchen (which you can currently buy for a steal due to our ‘Spectacular September sale… *wink wink nudge nudge*)

entry one hundred and ten

Greetings fellow humans,

I’m back from the future, and I’ve seen kitchens of all shapes and sizes, with technology you just won’t believe. Unsurprisingly for me, there’s still plenty of love for oak kitchens amongst the crazy contraptions and automated appliances of the future, but a variety of newfangled ideas really caught my eye.

Back here in the present day manufacturers are already looking to the kitchen of the future and giving us a glimpse of innovative ideas that will be transforming our favourite room in the house in the years to come. Last week at ‘IFA’ – Europe’s leading consumer electronics show – there were plenty of manufacturers keen to show that the future is not as far off as you might think.

LG Appliances App

Internet connected devices will allow us to synchronise cooking with a simple swipe of our smartphone’s screens, whilst (if LG are to be believed) we’ll be interacting with our appliances in a somewhat eerie chat app that can tell you exactly what’s in your fridge, and which allows you to make decisions remotely – you could start your washing cycle a little later, for example, if you get held up in traffic.

Whirlpool believes that projectors will make ‘holographic dining’ a reality, using contextual information to give you feedback on your food preparation, beam recipe suggestions directly onto your kitchen worktop, and much more besides. The same technology could also be applied to allow you to have a communal dining experience with friends or family on the other side of the country – or world.

Whirlpool Holographic Dining

3D printers are very much the technology of the moment, and they’ll one day be a staple appliance in the kitchen according to Electrolux. Imagine downloading a recipe, and then creating a meal with just a few presses of a touchscreen – it really is something out of a sci-fi film, but the reality is a lot closer than you might think.

I welcome a technology-laden kitchen of the future and the robot overlords that will no doubt come with them, but back here in the present day there’s plenty of modern technology to be found in a deTerra kitchen. Incredible Blum drawer and door mechanisms, the latest appliances and bespoke wooden worktops manufactured using the latest CNC equipment are all available from us right now.

If you fancy seeing one of our super kitchens in a little more detail, pay us a visit in our Gloucester showroom, where our human advisors will give you plenty of advice in making the modern-day kitchen of your dreams.

Yo yo yo!

contemPLATE an oak rack – a great finishing touch for wooden kitchens

Friday’s here and it’s round-up time on deTerra! We’ve got two tidbits to brighten your day and get you all set for the weekend…

Numero uno: mates for your plates. This week we added solid oak plate racks to our collection – a new item for us, and something we’re pretty proud of. After all, stacking plates can be a pain: dust, damage and inconvenient access are just a few of the downers of trying to store your plates in this way.

Enter the deTerra solid oak kitchen plate rack! Supplied pre-built in a 1200mm x 342mm section, our plate racks comfortably hold 24 plates and can be provided in either sanded, lacquered or painted finishes (using Farrow & Ball paint, no less! Swanky). Of course, if your cupboards aren’t quite so massive, these racks can be easily cut down to fit in any size unit.

Numbero two: cheap as chips wooden kitchens. Like the rest of our products, our plate racks are already pretty darn affordable. However, we’ll take any chance that we can get to treat our customers well, so we’re including these new items in our ‘Spectacular September’ sale – which offers 10% off ALL products (excluding samples). As if you needed another excuse to get your hands on deTerra’s awesomely oaken items! To use your discount, simply enter the code SEPT10 at the online checkout. Easy peasy, simple pimple.

Ta ta for now,

The deTerra Diarist
