Hey ‘Happy Tree Friends’,

filipino man planting trees

There’s only one thing I like more than natural kitchens, and that’s any project that gives this lush little planet a fighting chance in the future. Whilst I personally ensure that all of our kitchen products are made from sustainably-sourced timber, there’s still plenty that can be done to safeguard the forests of the future.

The people of the Philippine island of Mindanao are now leading the charge, having set a new record by planting by a ginormous 3.2 million trees in a single hour, thanks to an inspiring army of 160,000 people, including government employees, students and volunteers. That equates to an unbelievable 889 saplings hitting the soil every second, thrashing the previous Indian record of 1.9 million trees in an hour from August 2011 – and setting a new Guinness World Record in the process.

It’s a big turnaround for the Philippine archipelago, which was once a dense forest that fell victim to over development, logging and slash-and-burn farming, reducing the forest cover recorded in 2003 of over 630,000 hectares by 2010.

I’ve got a hunch that there’s a truly tree’mendous future in store for the Filipinos, as they have pledged to plant a further 1.5 billion trees by 2016 – an absolutely astonishing figure. Now I just hope other governments in South America follow their lead!

Howdy-ho, kitchen fans,

I’ve seen the oak kitchen of the future, and it’s laden with smart this, holographic that, but if you want a kitchen laden with the best that modern cooking gadgetry has to offer, then you best get your shopping list out and start taking notes. Here’s a list of my picks for the top 5 futuristic gadgets: handy, homely, and perfect for solid wood kitchens!

Aga Total Control

Aga Total Control

AGAs may not – at first glance – seem particularly futuristic, but their iconic retro design has been brought firmly into the 21st century thanks to the state-of-the-art Total Control models.

Available in 3 oven or 5 oven models, the total control gives you full and flexible control over the ovens and hotplates, and even allows you to set the AGA to still provide ambient warmth in the winter, whilst remaining off in the summer months.

If you’re looking for an up-to-date oven to fit into a farmhouse kitchen, then has got to be it. We’ve even got one on show in our showroom if you want to take a closer look.

If – like me – you have pondered the idea of growing your own herbs in your kitchen, but your fingers aren’t quite green enough to set off [a] rocket or you just simply don’t have the thyme (!), then the Smart Herb Garden from Click & Grow might just be for you.

It’s a self-contained garden that takes all the hard work out of herbs by feeding and watering them automatically, and has its own LED lighting built in to aid speedy growth.

Moen taps with MotionSense

Another gadget that requires little more than a wave of your hand to operate – the Moen MotionSense range has built-in sensors that mean you can wash your mucky hands without even touching the tap itself.

If you happen to be hot on hygiene then it’s perfect for curbing the spread of germs as well as keeping the tap considerably cleaner.

There’s a range of designs to suit modern and classic kitchens, available in chrome, bronze or stainless steel.

Philips AirFryer

Philips AirFryer

Fried food traditionally conjures up all sorts of unhealthy connotations, but that’s usually down to the unhealthy amount of oils used to cook the food.

Fancy new air fryers such as this one by Philips use little or no oil to fry food with the same tasty results, but without much of the unhealthy effects that food bathed in oil usually represents.

Whether you have a hankering for crispy chips or Kentucky-style chicken wings, the air fryer can feed your cravings whilst being considerably healthier.

entry one hundred and ten

Greetings fellow humans,

I’m back from the future, and I’ve seen kitchens of all shapes and sizes, with technology you just won’t believe. Unsurprisingly for me, there’s still plenty of love for oak kitchens amongst the crazy contraptions and automated appliances of the future, but a variety of newfangled ideas really caught my eye.

Back here in the present day manufacturers are already looking to the kitchen of the future and giving us a glimpse of innovative ideas that will be transforming our favourite room in the house in the years to come. Last week at ‘IFA’ – Europe’s leading consumer electronics show – there were plenty of manufacturers keen to show that the future is not as far off as you might think.

LG Appliances App

Internet connected devices will allow us to synchronise cooking with a simple swipe of our smartphone’s screens, whilst (if LG are to be believed) we’ll be interacting with our appliances in a somewhat eerie chat app that can tell you exactly what’s in your fridge, and which allows you to make decisions remotely – you could start your washing cycle a little later, for example, if you get held up in traffic.

Whirlpool believes that projectors will make ‘holographic dining’ a reality, using contextual information to give you feedback on your food preparation, beam recipe suggestions directly onto your kitchen worktop, and much more besides. The same technology could also be applied to allow you to have a communal dining experience with friends or family on the other side of the country – or world.

Whirlpool Holographic Dining

3D printers are very much the technology of the moment, and they’ll one day be a staple appliance in the kitchen according to Electrolux. Imagine downloading a recipe, and then creating a meal with just a few presses of a touchscreen – it really is something out of a sci-fi film, but the reality is a lot closer than you might think.

I welcome a technology-laden kitchen of the future and the robot overlords that will no doubt come with them, but back here in the present day there’s plenty of modern technology to be found in a deTerra kitchen. Incredible Blum drawer and door mechanisms, the latest appliances and bespoke wooden worktops manufactured using the latest CNC equipment are all available from us right now.

If you fancy seeing one of our super kitchens in a little more detail, pay us a visit in our Gloucester showroom, where our human advisors will give you plenty of advice in making the modern-day kitchen of your dreams.

Ta ta for now,

The deTerra Diarist
